Place de l'Opéra Paris 9 Metro: Opéra This beautiful building was designed by Charles Garnier and built in 1862 for Napoleon III. After running into a surprise, namely the lake underneath the building as well as the outbreak of the Prussian war, the construction was postponed for a while. The theatre finally opened it's door in 1875. Inside is very impressive with the marble staircase, huge chandeliers, velvet and golden leaf decorations. The ceiling was painted by Chagall in 1964. The stage inside can handle about 450 performers. Today Operas are held at the new Bastille Opera-house and this location is mostly used for Ballet shows.
