This beautiful building was designed by Charles Garnier and built in 1862 for Napoleon III. After running into a surprise, namely the lake underneath the building as well as the outbreak of the Prussian war, the construction was postponed for a while. The theatre finally opened it's door in 1875.
Inside is very impressive with the marble staircase, huge chandeliers weighing 8 tons, velvet and golden leaf decorations. The ceiling was painted by Chagall in 1964. The stage inside can handle about 450 performers.
Today Operas are held at the new Bastille Opera-house and this location is mostly used for Ballet shows.
