At Ile de la Cité, you can find one of the most famous cathedrals in the world.  Notre Dame Cathedral was built on the site where a Roman Temple once stood.

The construction of this Gothic cathedral began in 1163 took place under the supervision of Bishop Maurice de Sully.  However, it's construction was not complete until 1345.  After being neglected and damaged during the French Revolution, the 23 year long renovation began in 1845 by Viollet-le-Duc.  In 1991 another major restoration program started on the church.

Throughout history, Notre Dame has been a witness to major events such as the Coronation of Henry VI and Napoleon I.

Inside Notre Dame is just as impressive as it's outside, where you can fine beautiful stained glass windows,  and the most famous and original one is the 13 meter high Rose Window.  The stories of Bible are also told in the form of paintings.
