permanent collections. However, there is a charge for temporary
exhibitions. (free for under 14) Located in the Marais area, The carnavalet museum is dedicated to the history of Paris. The museum occupies an old palace dating back to 1548 which was renovated and expanded in 1655. Madame Sévigné lived in this palace from 1677 - 1696. Many of her belongings are displayed in the museum as well. The building is a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. It was turned into a museum in the 19th century. In 1989, the adjacent Hotel le Peletier, built in 1690 was added to this museum. Inside you will find paintings, furniture, and some personal items of French notables, from the time of King Henry IV to present. In the courtyard you will find the a statue of Louis XIV as well. Hours of Operation: Open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am - 6pm. Closed on Mondays and public holidays.
